Your next job in telecommunications may arise when you least expect it, and in order to be prepared we recommend you regularly update your CV.  Doing this enables you to keep track of your telecoms career progression, so that when your CV is needed you don’t have to remember activities from months or even years earlier. Failing to update your CV regularly may cause you to exclude key information, or worse, sending an old CV that doesn’t reflect your current skill set, ability and progression throughout your career. 

What that in mind, here are four helpful tips to consider when updating your telecoms CV.


1.  Stick to this basic formula

HR teams, recruiters and hiring managers need to instantly see a summary of your key skills & achievements, your current role and previous education/training, so order your CV as follows and don’t overcomplicate it:

  • A summary of your skills and recent achievements
  • Your current and previous employment details including employer name, job title, dates, responsibilities, and achievements in each role
  • Finally, your education including any relevant training / qualifications

…it really is that simple!


2. Record only your relevant employment history

Whilst it’s good to showcase your telecoms career history to date, future employers don’t need to know that your worked part-time in a retail shop whilst studying. List your telecoms career experience since you began working full-time. However, if you've had many jobs in telecoms from years ago, then consider listing (with full descriptions) only the most recent ones relevant to the telecoms job you’re applying for. For all other telecoms positions, simply add bullet points roles, dates and company.


3. Include key telecoms skills and career achievements

Your CV should have a key skills section at the top. This is the chance for you to show hiring managers instantly what your key skills are. Having this section updated is paramount in showcasing the best version of you. It’s tempting to list all your skills, but consideration should be given to the telecoms role you are applying for. A hiring manager will instantly know how you can benefit their business. Tailoring the key skill section for different jobs may result in you creating several CVs during your job search. However, doing this will be advantageous as it shows your passion for both telecoms and the job you're applying for. This can increase your chances of being selected for an interview.


4. Education and training

Education and training does not finish at school, college or university. Most telecoms professionals undertake educational courses throughout their telecoms career. Ensure this is reflected in your CV as it showcases your personal development.
