Senior Service Engineer (L2) – Networks & Connectivity

Cape Town | Permanent | Onsite

Monday–Friday | No nights or weekends

If you’re already a strong 2nd Line Network Engineer and find yourself being the person others turn to when a network issue gets complicated, this could be a strong next step.

Our client is a leading UK technology and managed services provider supporting complex network and connectivity environments for large enterprise customers. Their Cape Town operation works closely with UK teams and customers, providing high-level technical support across routing, switching, firewalls, wireless, WAN, SD-WAN and enterprise connectivity.

This is not a role where you simply escalate difficult tickets.

You’ll sit within a senior Tier 2 function and take ownership of complex network incidents through to resolution — diagnosing where faults actually sit, restoring service, leading technical troubleshooting during major incidents and working directly with carriers, vendors and specialist teams when required.

What you’ll be doing

  • Own complex L2 network and connectivity incidents from initial escalation through to resolution.

  • Troubleshoot enterprise LAN/WAN environments across single and multi-site customer networks.

  • Work hands-on with Cisco, Juniper and Extreme Networks routing and switching technologies.

  • Support Cisco Meraki switching, security appliances and dashboard environments.

  • Troubleshoot and implement firewall changes across Fortinet FortiGate, Palo Alto and Cisco platforms.

  • Diagnose VLAN, trunking, spanning tree, link aggregation and stacking issues.

  • Troubleshoot routing in live environments, including OSPF and BGP.

  • Support enterprise wireless environments across Ruckus, Meraki and Extreme Networks.

  • Investigate connectivity faults across broadband, Ethernet and DIA circuits.

  • Troubleshoot SD-WAN, including FortiSD-WAN and Meraki environments.

  • Diagnose site-to-site and remote-access VPNs, NAT and firewall policies.

  • Use packet capture and analysis to establish exactly where network faults sit.

  • Troubleshoot core networking protocols including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP and NAT.

  • Work directly with carriers and third-party providers to drive incidents through to resolution.

  • Act as a technical lead during P1 and major incidents, helping restore service while root cause analysis continues.

  • Identify recurring issues and drive permanent fixes through problem management and RCA.

  • Mentor and support first-line engineers, helping strengthen technical capability across the wider service desk.

What we’re looking for

You’ll ideally have 5+ years' experience within IT services, network support or an MSP environment, including at least 2 years at second-line level or above.

Most importantly, you need strong hands-on troubleshooting capability. You should be comfortable taking a complex network issue, working through it methodically and owning it rather than simply passing it to another team.

Strong experience across several of the following will be important:

  • Cisco / Juniper / Extreme Networks

  • Cisco Meraki

  • Fortinet FortiGate

  • Palo Alto

  • LAN / WAN

  • Routing & Switching

  • OSPF / BGP

  • VLANs / STP / Trunking

  • SD-WAN

  • VPN / NAT

  • Enterprise Wi-Fi

  • TCP/IP, DNS & DHCP

  • Packet capture and network analysis

  • Carrier / ISP connectivity troubleshooting

Experience with MPLS, Juniper Mist, network monitoring, Python, Ansible, load balancing, WAN optimisation or SIP/VoIP would be advantageous.

Certifications such as CCNA/CCNP, Fortinet NSE, Palo Alto PCNSA/PCNSE, JNCIA/JNCIS, CMNA or ITIL 4 would also be beneficial, but practical troubleshooting capability is key.

Why consider it?

This role offers the opportunity to work on complex enterprise network environments without moving into a 24/7 shift pattern.

You’ll have exposure to major customers, multiple networking vendors and challenging incidents where you are trusted to make technical decisions rather than simply follow a script.

The company also offers:

  • Permanent, full-time employment

  • 37.5-hour working week

  • Monday–Friday shifts between 07:30 and 18:00 UK time

  • No nights, weekends or 24/7 cover

  • Medical package

  • Funded certifications and professional development

  • Clear progression into senior and specialist networking roles

  • Supportive technical team with opportunities to learn from experienced engineers

If you’re a strong L2 Network Engineer, Network Support Engineer or MSP Network Engineer who wants more technical depth, greater ownership and exposure to enterprise environments, I’d be keen to speak with you.
